LIGFIETSKAARTSPEL
NVHPV, Netherlands, 2005

Dedicated readers of this site may remember Steve Nurse, a recumbent bicycle fan (or should I say expert) from Australia, maker of the print-and-play game Cycle Challenge. While on a trip to Eindhoven, he spotted this card game, created to commemorate the Dutch Recumbent Cyclists Association (NVHPV) 20th anniversary, and bought a few copies, one of which he has been kind enough to send me. So, this particular deck has travelled from Eindhoven to Australia and back to Barcelona. Almost a complete tour of the world! Steve explains it all in his blog, much better than I could possibly do. Recommended reading!

The deck can be used either as a regular card game or else as a Happy Families game. The categories for the Happy Families game are record bikes, tandems, velomobiles, children's bikes, low racers, trikes, other/special recumbent bikes, long wheelbase, deltas, semi-racers, commuter bikes, world travellers, and oldtimers.

Here is the Oldtimer family.

And these are the record bikes. There has been an evolution indeed.

On the other hand, if you are using it as a regular card deck, be aware that it has the Dutch index labels: H (Heer) = King; V (Vrouw) = Queen; and B (Boer) = Jack. (Warning for French readers: V is not "Valet" in Dutch cards). Indices for aces and face cards usually follow the local language. In case you are interested, and I do not see why you shouldn't be, here is a list of French-suited playing cards' index letters in different countries.

Thanks, Steve, for this game.
