VEILIG VOOROP SPEL
Groeneveld, Netherlands, ca. 2000

This is a rarely seen but quite uninteresting game made, I am told, as a promotion for Intersafe Groeneveld B.V. in Dordrecht (Netherlands). This Groeneveld company (not to be confused with the bike shop of the same name) provided workplace safety products and services, and is now part of Lyreco Intersafe since 2013. That would explain the somewhat misleading title of the game ("Safety First"), which would be more suited to a traffic game than to one representing a mountain bike race.

This game was featured on Ludo Nauws' wielerbordspel.be website. Though the site is long-defunct, parts can be retrieved from the Internet Archive's wayback machine, fortunately, and I am following Ludo's description.

Inside the 3 x 24 x 4.5 cm box we just find the board (46 x 32 cm, with the rules written on it), four cheapo plastic pawns, and a die. Even if the rules on the board are quite bombastic ("a nerve-wracking mountain bike race through various nature reserves", "you must overcome ravines, swamps, bridges, mountains, and much more"), the game has snakes-and-ladders mechanics (that is, roll and move with forks). This said, players have to "overcome the obstacles on this varied course and show that they are the fastest and the safest" (emphasis mine).

Close-up of the rules, in case you need them.

The rest of the rules are inscribed directly onto the board fields: "Forgot helmet, return to start", "Ravine: roll 2 or 3 to continue", "Fast descent, move 3 extra spaces forward", "Wet surface: move 1 space less than rolled on your next roll", and so on.

There is even one space with a doping control, though you just miss a turn on it. So much for safety.

Thanks, Tiny, for finding this game for me.
