December 2015

Sad news. Rob Bontembal, creator of Homas Tour (aka Um Reifenbreite) passed away unexpectedly on october 23rd. If you can read Dutch, here is his obituary. It is a good moment to review the early designs of his game that he was kind enough to show me when I visited him a few years ago.

Spare thoughts which I might add someday the theory texts:

From Adrian Seville's article "Statistical Characteristics of Enjoyable Race Games":

"Thus, for four players, the average number of rounds to win is about 17 for Snakes and Ladders and about 15 for Game of the Goose [..]. Furthermore, the standard deviation of the average number of rounds to win is about 8 for Snakes and Ladders and about 11 for Game of the Goose [..]. The convergence of these quantities for 4-player Game of the Goose and 4-player Snakes and Ladders is remarkable, given that these two games have totally different historical pedigrees. Presumably the characteristics of the games were developed by trial and error, with human enjoyment as the selection parameter."

You can find a link to the complete article in the bibliography.

June 2015

Wow!!! This website appears on Rouleur (issue 54) and on Tim Krabbé's new book De Veertiende Etappe. See the details in the events page.

I am really amazed. Rouleur is, of course, the best cycling magazine on earth (or at least the most beautiful, as they proudly say on their website), and I am very proud of being featured in it. However, appearing on Tim Krabbé's book is a whole different thing. According to the jury of the Nico Scheepmaker Prijs, "It is on one hand a literary masterpiece that therefore over 100 years will be read and on the other hand, the best sports book in the Dutch language". So I can expect to be remembered in 100 years. Who would have said it when I started to gather games?

More cycling-games-related activity:

A new cycling games exhibition will take place in Antwerp at the beginning of July while the Tour de France is around. It is will feature some games from Ludo Nauws' collection. See all the information (in Dutch) in Ludo's website.

There is also an exhibition of cycling figurines from Frans Kirkels' collection at the restaurant Ruig in Utrecht to conmerorate that the Tour will start there (I mean, in Utrecht, not in the restaurant) this year. Click here to see some pictures.

A cycling game (Cycling Party) has been awarded with the "Best General Game" distiction at the 2015 UK Games Expo. Congratulations!

A new cycling game on Kickstarter: Attack The Pack. I hope they make it!

Here is the interview with yours truly in the Volata magazine (PDF, spanish, 4 Mb).If you read Spanish you may find some typos and other assorted mistakes, the funniest of which is renaming Robert Chapatte as "Robert Shepard". August 2014

Changes in the chronological division of the post-war games in the categories section. I used to have "1945-1970", "70s & 80s", "Recent Games" and "Available Games".  With the new division you will have to find yourselves which games are available, though you can check the links section for some websites.

Games added:

Bicycle Race (UK, ca. 1900)
Bahnradrennen (Berliner Spiel/Rohner Verlag, Germany, 1972)

Games added to the unpublished games section:

Table Tour (Netherlands, 1950s)
Tour de France (Plasman, France, 1960s)

Three sets of riders added to the Corriere Dei Piccoli cut-up riders section: Giro 1959, Tour 1959 and Giro 1963.  The 1959 sets are great (probably the best in the series) and include  not only riders but cars and motorcycles of the caravan ands some race incidents. On the other hand, the 1963 set just features italian riders.

New Present !!!: The 1964 Tour de France cut-up riders, as offered by the Corriere Dei Piccoli. With these and the Giro riders (see april 2014) you can play (well, almost) the complete 1964 season. Click here to download (pdf, 1.4 MB). Remember that if you are going to print the riders, the original page was almost A3 size, you should print it on two landscape-oriented A4 sheets. Keep an eye on the Corriere Dei Piccoli cut-up riders section. I may upload  the rest of CdP riders sometime if I get enough feedback.

Birthday Present!!! I just turned 50 this month and I wanted  to offer you a birthday present (well, it should be the other way round... feel free to send me yours ;-) As you probably know, italian kid's magazine Corriere dei Piccoli offered periodically cycling related games, and they also offered periodically cut-up riders. Between the years 1959 and 1969 at least twelve different sets of riders were offered. I have prepared a small section about those. Furthermore, I wanted to offer you a high quality scan of at least one of the sets. Considering the Giro is starting in a few days, the choice was pretty obvious for me:
click here to download it (pdf, 3.6 MB). Beware, if you are going to print the riders, the original pages were almost A3 size, you should print each page on two landscape-oriented A4 sheets.

Games added:

Anyway, expect it sooner or later.

Good news: Geared - Build Your Bike has made it! It has been successfully funded on Kickstarter and the game will be produced. Since the print-and-play version of the game is already available (just for backers), I guess I could consider the game published and move it to the main section. However, I think I will keep it in the unpublished games section until I receive my copy.

December 2013

Unfortunately, "The Grand Tour Game" did not reach its goal on Kickstarter. However, there is another cycling game (though not a game about cycle racing) on Kickstarter at the moment. It is called "Geared - Build Your Bike". It is surely just a coincidence, but at first sight it does not look so different from this other game. Anyway, let's hope this one reaches its goal. I have already pledged, of course. (Thanks again for the tip, Hans!).

October 2013

Possible future new game called "The Grand Tour Game" on Kickstarter. (Thanks for the tip, Hans!).
I am not endorsing the game, since I just know what you can see on the kickstarter page.
I do not know if it is going to be a good game, just average, or a piece of crap.

However, it doen't not look too bad, does it?

Of course I have pledged to buy one ;-)

May 2013

Apart from games, I collect (mostly unusual) records and related items, in a collection I call GRAMOPHONIA. (Yes, I tend to give names to my collections, and I can justify it but it would take too long to explain it here). Part of this gramophonic collection intersects with my games' collection. I call this intersection GRAMOFONIA LUDICA (By the way, the F and PH in the word "gramo***onia" are interchangeable; which I choose depends on the context and to whom I am addressing to, but that's again, to long to explain now).

What is surprising (at least to me) is that this is the part of my collections that draws more attention. Probably it is its interdisciplinarity that makes it interesting. The fact is that I exhibited last year, and I have been asked to exhibit it again. This second GRAMOFONIA LÚDICA exhibition will take place in Sabadell (very near Barcelona), from may 10th to july 28th.

You can find all the information here: http://www.espaiculturasabadell.cat/Activitats/Exposicions/Gramofonia-Ludica
You can also check the exhibitions catalogue here: http://www.ankitoner.com/gramolud/index.htm

Naturally, this exhibition includes the two only cycling board games that include a record, Velo-Flash and Les 45 Tours de France. To celebrate this exhibition, I am making the contents of these records available in mp3 files. Enjoy!

On a different level, Maillot Arc-En-Ciel is officially sold out. Your copy has increased its value overnight!!! There may be a couple of copies left in stores that I could try to get back if absolutely necessary. This is why I have included the game in the TRADE LIST, but these copies may be sold tomorrow.

And yes, now I have a TRADE LIST.

Maillot Arc-En-Ciel is almost sold out. There are just a couple of copies left. If you still are thinking of buying it, it's your last chance (or else pay a small fortune for it on eBay someday). On the other hand, when I have time I will try to make a print and play version of the game. I will not be the same, of course... It would be nice if I could have it ready it for Christmas. It would be my present for you all, but I do not promise anything.

SPECIAL GIFT: 2 new free print'n'play games.

Keirin (Anki Toner, 2006/2012)
WielerSIM (Ludo Nauws, Belgium, 2009/2012)

The webmasters of the two only websites dedicated exclusively to cycling boardgames present their new games. Both games can be downloaded from both websites, in an unprecedented coordinated release. (Ludo's game, by the way, can be downloaded in Dutch and English from his website, but we only offer the English version here). By coincidence, both games are meant for solo playing, and, well, none of them is really new, but they are rather rewritings/revisions of two already described games. However is the first time they are presented as true print'n'play games (I mean, for which you only have to provide the dice).

4 boards by Michael McKale added to the "Make Your Own Games" section (another gift)
